Help me give my students eight Lego MINDSTORMS EV3 sets to incorporate coding and engineering into our Science classroom by using robotics in our STEM challenges.
My students attend a public middle school nestled in a small historic town located along the coast of North Carolina. Our school serves a diverse population coming from many parts of the world and all walks of life. We have recently adopted a program to assist our students with building the skills and strategies needed to overcome obstacles and achieve success in their futures. With this program we are building collaborative strategies and increasing exposure to potential college and career options for our students.
My students have recently suffered a huge tragedy as we were caught in the direct path of hurricane Florence - and they are the true definition of resilience.
Our community as a whole has suffered tremendous loss with many of our students being displaced from their homes and losing most of their possessions. While we work to rebuild and find a sense of normalcy, students are eager to return to classes and have shown a huge amount of compassion for their fellow classmates. Many of our school, staff and student resources have been lost, but it has not slowed down our drive for success or desire to accomplish our goals.
My Project
The incorporation of these kits into our Science classroom will put actual robots and programing into the hands of my students. Students will be asked to create robotic designs using the kits that can solve a real world problem presented to them about our curriculum in class. A sample challenge would be for students to build a robot that could deliver medical supplies to an area suffering from an outbreak where quarantines are put in place and human interaction needs to be kept to a minimum. Students would have to study the terrain of their assigned country to design a robot that could navigate given obstacles and safely deliver a medical kit that they have created to treat their patients.
By donating to this project, you are allowing students to use the Engineering Design Process to build their robots using the MINDSTORMS EV3 sets and test their programming skills when they try to safely navigate them through our obstacle course.
By incorporating this technology into my classroom I am able to infuse my Science units with real world STEM applications based on robotics and engineering. Many careers are already requiring basic levels of coding and programming and by starting our students out with this knowledge early we are better preparing them for their futures. My hope is to spark an interest in the SETM fields for as many of my students as possible. These kits would not only help to inspire students in my science classroom, but could also serve our summer STEM camp participants as well.
