My students on the robotics team are the most wonderful group of kids. They are so hard working, and I am able to trust them with anything. These students really take a lot of pride in our engineering program and put in the hard work and long hours to take care of our equipment and lab while always searching for funding to upgrade. They know the world is a competitive place and have a genuine desire to learn and improve themselves. Since they attend a science and technology magnet school, they wake up early in the morning to ride the bus to the far north end of the city. Almost 60% of them are on the federal free or reduced-price lunch program, and approximately 84% of them speak a language other than English at home. Despite these challenges, they are some of the highest achieving students in California, and they deserve to have no opportunity left unfulfilled.
Our student project leader Lousaper has become a master of operating metalworking machinery, earning multiple industry-recognized credentials. She is now looking to organize a new traveling set of tools for our team to take to our regional competition events.
Through this project, students will develop academic skills in geometric construction while designing and planning the toolbox drawer layouts to contain these new tools in custom-fitted lasercut foam inserts. Furthermore, students will build skills in teamwork as they collaboratively join each other to organize and use these new tools to maintain and repair their robots during competition events. By having a dedicated traveling set of high-quality tools, critical things will never be forgotten back at the school, and the team will be confident and well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the competition ahead. Furthermore, the time saved in packing tools will allow students more time to further develop their designs, computer programs, and printed documentation in preparation for the competition event.
For years, our team has had to work out of unorganized storage containers and tool boxes, creating inefficient situations. In the team's effort to become more organized, we are putting together toolboxes that have tools that will only be used for traveling. Having packed toolboxes will save the team time from packing and getting everything together and helping the team put more time into building the robot.
This project will be helping the team be more organized and I am happy to be a part of it. I will make the most of this opportunity by trying to keep everything in place all the time and teach other team members where everything goes. I will also be making foam inserts to keep all the tools in the correct places and drawers.
This project is important because having set tools for our toolboxes will prevent our team from forgetting things that we need and save us time before competitions. It will also help us keep track of the tools that we lend out to other teams when they need them at the competitions and event we attend.
