I teach in a rural Midwestern high school. My classroom tends to be a flurry of activity. I want kids to experience science, not just read about it, so I try to engage them in hands-on activities where they can play with manipulatives, equipment and other materials to connect the science to their lives.
My students range from high-ability to the academically struggling with about 50% on free or reduced lunch.
Many work very hard to do well in school so they can graduate and go on to college or a trade school. Science class is often a favorite because we do so many activities, hands-on labs and experiments.
My Project
These materials will be used for an after-school program at the high school to teach students about robotics, coding and programming. These will help the students learn problem-solving skills, teamwork and engineering design. Building the robots takes time and the ability to follow instructions. Coding and programming makes the students think logically and work through any problems that arise as they attempt to code for a specific task.
Working on this project will help open their eyes about possible STEM degrees and careers in their future.
With this experience, they can see what they are capable of and begin to set high goals after graduation.
