My Students

Creative, kind, curious, smart...these are all words I would use to describe our class. I have been teaching for eleven years, and I can truly say that this is a class of LEARNERS: children who are hungry to find out how things work and why; who choose to read books, build paper cities, and write stories during free time; who work together to solve problems and offer each other ideas without being prompted.

These are the kiddos who are becoming the movers and shakers of the next generation.

I find myself inspired by the inquisitive, tenacious students who I am lucky enough to call "mine" this year. Whenever I present them with an experimental art project, a new math concept, or a chance to design something to solve a problem, I know I can count on this group of kiddos for the most creative, outside-the-box approach that one could imagine. This class is ready to learn, try new things, and change the world.

My Project

The goal of my proposal is to teach Computer Science through LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 Core Sets. WeDo 2.0 is an engaging curriculum, allowing students to experience engineering and programming within a meaningful context. They use teamwork and communication through pair programming, developing the skills they need to be effective collaborators in their classroom and community.

The LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits allow students to become creative problem-solvers, confident scientists, and imaginative innovators.

According to Washington State Learning Standards in Computer Science, third grade students are expected to:

• Use technology to collaborate, communicate, generate innovative ideas, investigate and solve problems.

• Apply collaboration strategies to problem-solve within the design cycle of a program.

• Use pair programming to construct programs, in order to solve a problem or for creative expression.

If funded, I will have the resources I need to introduce students to these critical concepts. The money will be used to purchase eight LEGO WeDo Robotics kits, as well as the curriculum pack, which is built on Next Generation Science Standards and includes over 40 hours of instructional content in life-, physical-, earth- and space sciences, engineering, and programming.

The need for students to have access to engineering and programming opportunities is great.

• Washington currently has 22,018 open computing jobs.

• The average salary for a computing occupation in Washington is $107,853, which is significantly higher than the average salary in the state.

• Washington only had 1,001 computer science graduates in 2014, and of those, only 20% were female.

The innovative and curious students in my third-grade class are eager to design, build, and program, and as their teacher, I want to be able to offer them those opportunities.
