My Students

My students come to our school science lab not only to learn about science but to experience it. Hands-on science is taken to a new level in my classroom and the excitement that my students have as the enter the room everyday is what every teacher dreams of.

I work in a culturally and economically diverse community in a large city in Illinois.

The students in our public school speak more than 30 different languages. Many of them come from families that have come here from different countries and their families speak different languages at home. Science class can be especially difficult for students that are already challenged by the English language and have limited vocabularies. That is one of the many reasons I try to make my science class as visual and hands-on as possible.

My Project

Google has a interesting approach to employee creativity and boy does it pay off. They allow employees a certain amount of time to explore self directed interests while at work! This leads to all kinds of fascinating ideas and discoveries that can benefit the company.

Robotics is an area of exploration my students are fascinated with and our lab is in need of supplies to support this.

STEM education is essential to all students. The requested robotic kits will allow my students to be successful in putting together a variety of models that use science concepts, computer coding, and math skills in the build. One of the kits requires students to use knowledge of potential and kinetic energy to construct different simple machines. Another utilizes coding to create a working remote control car. The tinkering labs kits introduce students to robotics and engineering with the use of circuits and motors. All these kits allow students to explore the science of robotics and they love it!

I am passionate about promoting the science interests of my students. Whether it is working with plants or creating new technology students learn best when they are guided by their own ideas and curiosity!
