Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Special Education students are often discussed in terms of their deficits instead of their assets. We talk about their struggles, instead of the benefit that comes from having a brain that processes information in a different way or approaches tasks from a new perspective. Often our students have immense skills - they just aren't necessarily the skills that are measured in a typical classroom.
My students love to build.
So far this year, we have created egg drops to mimic air drops of vital medicine to foreign countries, paper cars to test crash safety, bridges and towers to recognize structure, rockets to demonstrate energy, and roller coasters to understand momentum. Every time they have astounded me with their creativity and ability to come up with creative solutions to the challenges inherent in these builds.
My Project
The Lego mindstorms system combines both programming skills and robotics into a single opportunity for students to learn skills that they will be able to use throughout their life. I am going to attend training over the summer to learn specifically about teaching with this system and need enough kits to allow students to take ownership over their learning.
Together, we can prepare students with the practical and life skills to achieve their post-secondary goals.
They will learn computer programming, building, problem-solving, group work, and so much more. They will get to be creative and show off all of their strengths, instead of being noticed for their deficits. Plus, they will be able to explore potential careers for their future.
