Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of hardworking individuals. I started a robotics club in order to further their STEM knowledge, and the students' response has been incredible. We recently competed in the Front Range BEST competition, and they took home the Rookie Team of the Year Award. They greatly look forward to our weekly meeting, and are highly motivated in honing their engineering skills.
I teach in a low-income community of Southwest Denver; 95% of our students are the on free or reduced-price lunch program, and 85% identify as Hispanic.
Despite their underprivileged background, they are determined to excel in school and attend a four-year college. I am inspired by their work ethic every day.
My Project
The Robotics Club I started at my school currently does not have any funding and we do not have any robotics equipment. We participated in a regional robotics competition this past fall, from which we borrowed a robotics kit from the tournament organizers. However, we had to return the kit after the competition was over. Our kids performed awesome, making it to the playoff round (against mostly high school teams!) and taking home the Rookie Team of the Year Award. I am asking for a drone kit, a robotic building system kit and a solar robot kit.
These requested kits will allow our Robotics Club to continue to hone our STEM skills, with an emphasis on engineering and design.
The kids would all be thrilled to work on these robots during our weekly meetings, and they will undoubtedly set us up for success in next year's robotics competition.
