I have a 1st Grade classroom full of 22 kiddos that are inquisitive, hands-on learners. In my school there are 150 first graders. They love to investigate and discover the world around them. These students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 85% of them receiving free lunch. Our school is very much ethnically diverse with many different languages spoken. Many of our students are sent home for the weekend with bags of food. Despite the hardships, they are always so eager to learn, and it's my job to keep it exciting for them.
My Project
One of the areas my students struggle with the most is collaboration and problem solving in a group setting. With the Sphero Minis, Cozmo, and Sphero Ollie robots, my students will get the chance daily to collaborate, give input, problem solve together, and figure out ways to make these robots do the required tasks.
My students will collaborate, communicate, think creatively, and problem solve as a group to get the robots to race, maneuver over a ramp, or guide it through a maze.
At the STEM center there will be very few instructions given with the thought that they will talk through their ideas and be able to make them a reality. At the center there will be many different items such as tubing, boards, blocks, etc. for them to be able to take advantage of and manipulate to create mazes, race tracks, and anything else they come up with.
