Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are taking Principles of STEM and Robotics and attending an after school STEM program. Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, including a large portion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, the hands-on experience keeps them engaged and learning.
One of my goals as a STEM educator is to integrate the STEM field throughout various topics of study.
This involves looking at how STEM impacts other areas of life: history, civics, art, antibullying, social-emotional well being, and more. In order to minimize the effects of social distancing, we are looking for ways to keep my students engaged in real-world applications of STEM.
The STEM field is largely geared towards men, so it is my desire to create an environment that encourages young women to be involved with and successful in STEM. Through innovative projects and STEM awareness, I am hoping to balance the ratio of male to female students in STEM fields. Also, with such a high percentage of EL students and low socioeconomic students, laboratory experience and hands-on learning is an excellent way to enrich their education.
My Project
The BrainCo STEM Kit provides students the experience to learn about 3D printing & materials, mechanical design, principles of circuits and senors, coding and career exploration in Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering. These kits feature bionic arms that can be controlled from the computer or through coding.
These Robotic Hands will provide my students with experience in cutting edge robotics that is sure to prepare them for future STEM education and careers.
With these hands, students will have access to curriculum year after year. Some of the most intriguing projects include applied artificial intelligence, as well as learning the science behind prosthetics. We are so excited for this project because it is will give my students access to technology that many high school students would never have the opportunity to experience.
