About My Students

My students are taking Honors Anatomy & Physiology as a science elective. Many of them aspire to work in the medical field in the future!

These students are juniors & seniors in high school. They are inquisitive, creative and passionate about science! They thrive when given hands-on learning opportunities.

We want to push them to think beyond introductory skills and give them the chance to build a finger (hand) that emulates humans. Students will use everyday materials to build a flex sensor, and turn it into a robotic finger!

Students take on the role of electrical, mechanical and software engineers and data scientists.  In order to effectively study the anatomy and biomechanics of the human hand, students will aid in building a model robotic hand! They will build a  sensor glove for controlling the robotic hand and analyze sensor data to inform testing and modifying the robotic hand.  Help us get supplies such as jumper wires, breadboards, arduino, and fiber cables to build our sensor hand.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to understand the muscle and bone movements of the hand. Building the sensor finger will push us to follow complex directions, work as a team, and learn about muscle movement. We want to be challenged to build the robotic model using everyday items and technology, while having fun learning about engineering.

Learning about the bone and muscle relationship with more than just diagrams will be awesome! I'm excited to lead my lab group with this project, using some of my previous knowledge about assembling things. I like to build and use my hands. I'll be able to carry this information with me next year to college also!

Building a sensory finger, is important to challenge my students to think creatively, be innovative and engage in hands-on learning. It's an exciting new way to learn! This project will advance our STEM philosophy of education. It will be rewarding for students to use household items to build a finger sensor.
