My students need the Lego Mindstorms, Fischertechnik and HanzMoto kits to design, build and test their own machines and robots, putting all of their STEM skills to use.
"Study is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think."- Albert Einstein
My students need hands-on materials to conquer the STEM concepts. They are eager to build and design and want to test their creations. These concepts can not be learned from a book, they require activity.
I have 25 students of a variety of cultural, economic and ability levels.
There is a range of ability of more than three years just within the class. Some of the students are English Language Learners, while a few have been diagnosed with conditions ranging from Autism to ADHD. Our school had a high free and reduced lunch enrollment, and parent involvement varies.
My Project
My students need the Lego Mindstorms, Fischertechnik and HanzMoto kits to design, build and test their own machines and robots, putting all of their STEM skills to use. These materials will allow me to give my students opportunities to explore the STEM concepts and make their own discoveries. Students will use the materials to build their own robotic creatures from their own designs. I want them to develop a large question, and design a project that will solve the problem, such as if they want their creature to move a certain way, what will they need to do to have that happen? They will be introduced to many STEM concepts in designing, building and testing their creatures.
I am requesting robotic building materials and simple machine pieces to allow students to design a creature, build it and test it. The students will be able to use the robotic pieces to make a robot that would follow basic commands. The materials requested offer a variety of building kits from very basic connections to more advanced designing and engineering. I envision my students using the pieces to test their ideas and build robots based on their ability levels.
STEM concepts can not be effectively taught without hand-on materials.
Students need the chance to design, build and test their theories. We currently do not have any of this equipment available. My students do not have the resources needed to learn these concepts. I feel these materials will excite and engage them in a field that is critical to their future.
These resources of robotic materials and kits are not available currently, and we do not have the funding to purchase them in the budget.
