My Students
I teach in a small school with less than 500 students. We have all grade levels, Kindergarden-5th grade, who have classes with me in the STEAM lab. We also have two self contained special education classes whose students are mainstreamed with the regular education classes.
Our students love to explore and solve problems.
They are curious thinkers who love the opportunity to work hands on with different types of materials. Since they have discovered coding and robots, their excitement to learn has only grown.
Our STEAM lab is a space for the students to have freedom and choice in their learning. They are a group of makers and a joy to teach!
My Project
In our STEAM lab, we already have five Dash robots. The students love working with them. All ages, from Kindergarten to 5th grade, really enjoy learning about algorithms and coding by programming the robots. Our groups can get quite large with just five robots, so if we added five more to our collection, students could get more opportunities to work with them.
We use the robots not only to teach students about computer science, but also to teach grade level standards and 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
The students work together in small groups to have the robots run mazes, explore maps, and figure out math problems. They record their voices after researching and the robots tell what they have learned.
