Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school with an incredibly diverse population. We are over 50% Hispanic, with a large population that identifies as Asian, Turkish, Pakistani, Syrian, Persian, Polish, Egyptian, or another minority ethnicity.
We also have over 20 varsity sports at our school, including track and field, tennis, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, baseball, softball, hockey, cheerleading, swimming, football, cross country, and bowling.
I am also a mentor for our FIRST Robotics Team. I am in charge of our business plan and our judged awards along with two other business mentors. Each season, we have to write an extensive business plan and present our findings to the judges. The FIRST Robotics Team is composed of 75 members who are as diverse as our school population, with 40 new members this season.
We have an award-winning school for visual and performing arts [SVPA] here at our school. We train our students in public speaking, dance, acting, singing, and other musical instruments. We build our own sets for our plays and work with professionals in the industry.
My Project
Our robotics team uses JAVA programming to control our robot. Each season we build a 5 ft, 120 lb robot which competes 3 on 3 with other robotics teams from around the district, region, and world. This season, we are competing in the Infinite Recharge game, which is going to be revealed during the first weekend in January.
This project is for the newest motor from VEX, the Falcon, which is a brushless motor and contains an integrated talon speed controller.
Using this motor will lessen the amount of wiring that needs to be done and will save both weight and space. We will be able to learn how to code this robot using JAVA during our six week build season, thanks to these remarkable kits. We are also getting a kit of parts and we will be coding some of these items as well.
We are also requesting a Voltage Regulator Module [or called the VRM]. The students will use this module to properly regulate the number of volts that goes to each motor or controller on the robot. We need to make sure this is coded properly in order to see the robot work.
The students are very excited about these coding kits and robot pieces. Thank you so much for choosing to fund our project out of the thousands that are here on DonorsChoose. This project is part six of a multi-teacher/mentor, multi-part project. I am one of the coaches.
