R.O.A.R.S. Readers Overcoming Adversity and Reaching Success
Help me give my students the opportunity to read with fewer distractions. The noise-reduction ear-muffs will provide students the opportunity to focus more easily on their self-selected reading materials. The study carrels will block distractions from their sight.
My school is a 100 percent Title I school, which means that all of the students receive free-lunch benefits. My students are from diverse cultural backgrounds. The school has a partnership with a local medical school that provides assistance for health care. Needless to say, many of my students live in dire poverty, but their resilience, love for learning, and hopeful spirits inspire me every day.
My students are excited about reading.
I have started a program, based on research that shows the benefits of allowing students to freely choose what they read. Thus, my students have become voracious readers. They regularly visit our school library, and they have devoured the books in my small classroom library.
Some students have difficulty focusing on reading due to internal and external distractions, however, which necessitates the project I am currently hoping to fund. Students who have ADHD have difficulty sitting still and focusing on reading, which not only causes distractions for themselves, but for other students as well. Other students, who may have internal turmoil due to adverse living conditions, have difficulty focusing on reading if there are external distractions.
My Project
The study carrels and noise-reduction ear muffs will allow students the opportunity to read in a distraction-free zone so they can escape into the imaginary world the authors create for them. The more involved students are in reading, the more likely they are to become life-long learners who experience all the benefits reading provides.
By providing these noise reduction ear muffs and study carrels, donors will be helping my students to focus more easily on their self-selected reading materials.
The more focused and engaged students are in what they read, the more likely it is that they will become more successful readers.
