I teach kindergarten in a mixed ability class of students with and without special needs. Some of my students are at risk due to low income, limited English proficiency, single-parent homes, and other factors.
My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions!
They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My Project
This project is for classroom incentives for our students. Our school is in year three of implementing the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program. The mission of the PBIS program is to provide support for positive behavior at all levels of the school including school-wide, classroom, and individual support. Our goal is to build a school-wide environment where positive behavior is reinforced.
When using positive behavior support and appropriate classroom management, research has shown a decrease in problems which increases academic time.
PBIS is a preventative approach in addressing positive behavior resulting in greater academic success. We use the anacronym ROAR to remind the students of expected behaviors. ROAR stands for: be Respectful, Offer Kindness, Act Safely, and be Responsible.
The incentives purchased with this grant money will provide rewards for the students who demonstrate behavior that is consistent with our ROAR motto. The incentives will include desk pets (mini erasers), play doh, and pop its. The incentives will be awarded to the students when the class receives 100 ROAR compliments. These incentives are a crucial and vital aspect of the PBIS program. They serve both as a reward and motivator for positive behavior for the students. The students get very excited about these incentives and are highly motivated to abide by the ROAR motto.
