My students are a diverse group of learners. They attend a Title I School in North Carolina, and many receive free breakfast and lunch daily. While a few of my students live in the affluent, historic neighborhood near our school, many others live in low-income housing, including the local homeless shelter. Many of my students come to school without the supplies, resources, or language skills needed to be successful in today's educational system.
Despite the differences in their backgrounds, my students enjoy learning and growing together in our second grade classroom.
They collaborate daily during small group lessons, projects, and other group activities. They share ideas, encourage others, and demonstrate respect for one another in our diverse classroom community.
My Project
My students love coming to school and love learning new things about the world around them. In the early years of elementary school, students are learning how to read and write through songs, engaging stories, and play. In second grade, students transition from learning HOW to read to reading to LEARN. This requires much more independence in reading which can be challenging and scary for many students that are still grappling with the puzzle of reading.
Through texts about engaging content in a kid-friendly format, students are more likely to take risks with reading and writing to learn more about a topic that interests them.
This series of nonfiction books is simple to navigate for early readers while still providing them with rich vocabulary and experience with reading informational texts.
Because my students will be motivated to learn new information by reading these books, they will also be able to use them for research projects in class. One of our second grade standards asks students to use multiple resources to find information about one topic. Technology is a great tool, and my students have been able to find lots of information through websites and online ebooks, but I also want my students to know how to find information from books in print. These books will allow my students to develop their research skills and learn how to use books as a tool to find the answers to their questions.
