We are a Title I school. Our school offers free breakfast and lunch for all students. There is a large number of students in our school who rely on the backpack program for food. Our community is in a rural part of the county which limits our families' access to resources and results in a high mobility rate.
For many of my students kindergarten is first exposure to a formal school setting.
Less than 50% of them will have attended Pre-Kindergarten or daycare. Either way they come to school ready to learn and I want to be able to meet all of their needs by providing a learning environment that is warm and welcoming.
My Project
Kindergarten students love to "read and write" about real world things - animals, space, people, etc. Won't they be excited when they can independently read about all those things they love. My students will be gaining knowledge and a love of reading and writing.
These non-fiction sight word readers will help my students learn those very important sight words, enabling them to become independent readers.
Once a child can fluently read a significant number of "sight words" they are on their way to becoming not only wonderful readers, but great writers.
