My students need thirty-five copies of Roald Dahl's novel, "The BFG". They need this to expand their language and vocabulary in written and oral expression.
"I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage." This quote by Roald Dahl describes what I want for my students.
My students are fourth graders in an Oklahoma school.
The school is one of six elementary schools in our district. They currently attend a school in which the free and reduced lunch count is over fifty percent. We receive a limited amount of Title I funding through the state. On average, there are 75 students in the fourth grade.
My Project
These resources will be used as a literature unit in my class. It will also be used to teach across the curriculum. During the reading, students will identify the motivation and cause and effect of characters actions. They will identify figurative language and the vivid vocabulary that Dahl uses throughout the novel. There is a play adaptation of the novel. Students will practice fluency with the play version. Due to the BFG being a giant, students will use measurement benchmarks to determine various measurements in the novel, e.g. snozzcumbers, dream jars, the BFG's step, the Queen's palace. The BFG has enormous ears so that he can hear 'absolutely every single twiddly little thing'. This will be an introduction to our sound unit in science. Students will execute experiments to determine sounds waves and explain how we hear. The giants travel to lots of different places to find humans to gobble up. Students will identify these places on a map and create a presentation over each place.
Due to limited budgets, this project is not possible without you!
This novel will inspire my fourth grade students to use more vivid language throughout their work. Due to the fun nature of this novel, it will ignite a stronger passion for reading. It is difficult to convince students to read longer novels. With your assistance, we can show them the great literature that is available for them to experience.
