This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are freshmen enrolled in Geography at an urban charter school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, due to a variety of factors particular to low-income urban education, many of these students come to us with many deficient skills and knowledge sets.
Luckily, their passion for learning, when unearthed via engaging curriculum, has proven to remedy these deficiencies.
They, therefore, are in great need of dedicated educators, creative education, and committed community support, as we work to give all students the education and the future they deserve.
My Project
My students are in grave need of stronger geographical knowledge. In an effort to improve this, I have planned a beginning of the year assignment where students will plan a road trip around the United States. To successfully implement this project I will need access to 80 US Interstate Maps for the students to use as the poster board and routing of their trip.
I have done this assignment in past years, albeit with smaller student groups, with fantastic success.
Unfortunately, now that I am looking to expand this work to the entire Freshmen class, the mass purchase of maps is simply not in our school's budget moving forward. My students need your help!
