There is a growing concern for Environmental awareness in the students of rural West Virginia. My students are taking ownership as stewards of the environment by designing projects and conducting experiments related to environmental sustainability. Students: Hunter and Alex wanted to design a saltwater fish tank to study climate change.
After discussing the applications a salt water tank would have in the understanding of the ocean, we determined this would allow rural Appalachian students to better understand Climate Change. Our students are still influenced by skeptical views concerning global warming. This generation is eager to better understand climate change and learn how to become better environmental stewards.
In order to design this saltwater fish tank, students must problem solve, budget, collaborate with peers and communicate with professionals to design a salt water fish tank in order to study climate change and its affect on ocean climate. In making decisions about the best fish to use, students will communicate with expert pet store representatives. Students will be exposed to career opportunities in environmental science and oceanography.
In Their Own Words
Our goal with this project is to successfully build an oceanic aquarium. With this project, we have a goal to learn the effect of global climate change on the ocean and its inhabitant. We want to learn how the global climate has affected the ocean and its Carbon Dioxide intake. If we can learn about the Carbon dioxide intake, then would be able to study how it is affecting the living organisms in the ocean.
This project is a great way to show leadership in my school. Once we can begin, we will be able to start the project and keep data. We are being leaders because we are starting a project that will be needed kept up by future students. We are being leaders of the class and future classes by starting a project that needs to be continued by other classes.
This project is important to help explain the effects of global climate change in the ocean to a community that has no ability to learn otherwise. Since we live in a rural area, we have no learning experience to base our knowledge from. We would be able to solve the problem of being uninformed and learn the true facts of the effect of global climate change on the ocean and the living organisms inside it.
