Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of reading a book you just couldn't put down? Let's share that memorizing feeling.
My school is in inner city Providence, a school where more than 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
We have a large percentage of English Language Learners. This means that I structure my reading lessons to include the cultural backgrounds of my students.
My Project
As I begin Unit 3 in Reading and Writing, my students will explore texts of the American Historical fictional genre. They will read novels of characters who overcome challenges in their lives during a certain historical time period.
Out of the 13 English Language Learners, 12 of them come from a hispanic linguistic background.
Esperanza Rising is a story of a young Mexican immigrant who flees her home country with her mother in order to look for a better life. The story follows her as she becomes a farm worker in California. She struggles to adjust the challenges, hard work, financial struggles and lack of acceptance that her life brings.

This book deals with themes of wealth, privilege, grief, loss and hope. All issues that many of my students can relate to in their journey.
Throughout this book study, my students will explore literary examples from the text to illustrate a theme of the book through character analysis.
