This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach language arts to students with a wide range of abilities. Almost half of my students are special needs students; some are non-readers even though they are in fifth grade. The rest of the students are at or above the fifth grade level in reading. One thing they have in common is that they are almost all living at the poverty level, and many come from homes that are unstable. My school is a safe haven for them which emphasizes the importance of learning. Since I teach to such a wide range of abilities, I believe it is important for the students to learn at their own pace in order to be successful. Once the students feel confident in their abilities, they will strive to build on their skills and seek further success in their learning experience.

My Project

This year my students are developing a love for reading which I find very exciting. They are extremely interested in the topic of The Holocaust and would like to read Number the Stars by Lois Lowery. Currently our school doesn't have any copies of this novel. I would love to be able to have my students read this novel by having a classroom set for them to use. This novel will allow them to see what people experienced during World War II and to develop empathy for all people who are living under extremely difficult circumstances during times of war.
