My Project
Small. Skinny. Unskilled. These are not the typical adjectives used to describe a national leader. Yet students who read Pamela S. Turner's "Samurai Rising: The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune" will see how a commoner overcame childhood tragedies to become one of the most revered samurai in Japan's history.
This true account of one Asian man's epic feats mirrors those of George Washington overturning a monarchy to build a nation.
Readers will find many parallels to medieval Europe while discovering fascinating insights into Japanese culture. Students will see heroic deeds are accomplished by people of tremendous heart and unflagging courage.
In addition to expanding readings from Asian, students also will benefit from historical texts explaining empires built in medieval Africa with the the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. Biographical information about Genghis Khan informs about Mongolia conquests, while history about the Popol Vuh highlights South American civilizations.
