We have a very diverse student population. Our students come from a wide variety of income levels and social settings. With over 70% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches, many of my students don't have access to books or eBooks.
Our middle school students thrive on learning from examples set for them and from those they study and read about in their classwork and in their free time.
They are busy learning about themselves and how they will fit into the big wide world. With so much structure and focus on testing and standards, students need the time to let loose and allow their minds to visit different worlds, different experiences and even learn on their own. This can be done through reading books of their choice just for the fun of it!
They love the freedoms offered in middle school, when compared to elementary school, and are learning how to make decisions that will create positive outcomes.
My Project
Our students need to read in order to become not only better readers, but better writers and have greater vocabulary. Reading for pleasure allows them to learn these skills through modeling and seeing. Our project will provide teachers' classrooms with a great range of book choices for their students.
We can only spark an interest in reading and growing if we are able to provide a wide variety of choices to our students.
Purchasing books can be expensive, and our struggling families sometimes just can't provide that. Our local library is great, but not every child can get to it due to family schedules. Our school library is great, but can only purchase 1 or each title it offers. Buy allowing our classroom teachers to have a greater selection, our students can continue to choose books they like, growing in their skills as they read more and more.
Helping students read is fun is perfect way to build better readers, writers and learners.
