My Students

I teach advanced English and creative writing to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined, and eager to make the world a better place.

My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.

They want to make their mark in the world and it's my job to prepare them.

My Project

2020 has been impossibly hard for students and their families. At my high school, we have "lost" dozens of students who, for one reason or another, have just floated away from school. We are trying everything imaginable to get them back.

I would like to obtain gift cards from Dunkin' Donuts, Mc Donald's and Amazon, so that I can use them as incentives and acknowledgements for hard work.

Dunkin' and Mc Donald's are local spots that students know and like, so they will be able to use the cards immediately. The Amazon cards can go toward family expenses.

There are many complicated reasons why students aren't in school right now. The only way that I have found success in getting them back is by personally reaching out and by acknowledging them. So many of them feel lost. The cards help me to let students know that they matter. Thank you.
