Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of the students come from lower socioeconomic neighborhoods in Chicago. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also a very diverse school. We have a large population of special needs students who attend our school.
Most of the students come from lower socioeconomic neighborhoods in Chicago.
At times, students have accidents or even come in with clothes that need to be washed. We want students to feel comfortable and stigma-free throughout the school day. Attending school in dirty clothes can make them feel stigmatized. Having these appliances and enough detergent would give them this opportunity.
My Project
Attending school in dirty clothes would make my students feel stigmatized. They might have an accident during the day and need their clothes to be washed. They might not come to school in clean clothes for whatever reason. We would like to provide the opportunity for them to be successful without any stigmas. Some students might be able to wash the clothes themselves, thus learning independence outside of the Special Education environment.
The overall goal for this lesson is for you to complete the sorting, washing and drying of a load of laundry using standard laundry supplies and a portable washer and spin dryer.
By the end of the lesson you will be able to: Sort laundry by fabric type and color prior to washing, distinguish among the general types of standard laundry supplies, including detergent, dryer sheets, and fabric softeners, add the appropriate amount of detergent, fabric softener to the washing machine, set the washer’s water temperature, water level and agitation cycle based on the type and amount of material being laundered, set the dryer’s heat settings based on the type of material being dried. Lessons will be printed for the students to review.
They will leave our classroom with the skills that they need and can use the rest of their lives. Please help us to stay clean throughout the school day.
