Riot, Race, Gender and Identity

My students need two movies, a class set of Walter Dean Myers' latest book "Riot", and four other group sets of books that cover issues of gender, race, and identity across various cultures and historical time frames.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English Language Arts at a high-needs middle school in New York City. As urban students whose families come from many different parts of the world, my 8th grade students are well aware of how racial and ethnic differences have affected their lives.

What many of them don't quite understand is how important these differences are and how their own struggles are actually universal in nature. Their view of difference and the prejudices that arise with difference are, at times, stereotypical or knee-jerk responses. My students don't just need books; they need to broaden their understanding of ethnic diversity through books in an empowering way.

This project aims to teach empowerment in the face of prejudice through films and books that center on identity and relationships. This dual focus on introspection and interpersonal bonds will connect with each of my adolescent students as they work through their own issues. Walter Dean Myers' screenplay Riot, Rabbit Proof Fence, Deborah Ellis' Bifocal and Richard Wright's Rite of Passage present issues for African-Americans during the Civil War and the 1940s, Aborigines in the 1930's Australia and Muslim-Americans in the current era.

Your donations will allow my students to take a step back and review very visceral issues of prejudice, justice and identity formation from an academic viewpoint. Hopefully, their new knowledge can transform struggle into understanding, empowerment and progress.
