Ring My Bell: A Compound Machine Design Challenge!

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are eager, urban middle school STEM students. I teach in a very diverse school with students who are very passionate about STEM education. The students in my STEM classes are creative and hard working. Most of the students in my classes will be first generation college students and many plan to pursue careers in STEM fields, many of who aspire to be engineers. STEM resources are essential to enhancing these students’ curiosity and creativity. Providing hands-on classroom experiences gives my students the skills needed to be the best in their classes moving forward to high school, college, and beyond.

My Project

The dominoes, building blocks and marbles will provide a hands on opportunity for my students to explore the benefit simple machines provides. Students will work through the engineering design process to construct a successful bell ringing machine that works consistently and can run longer than the other machines in class. The marbles will be used to transfer energy between machines such as an inclined plane and a lever. The dominoes will act as levers lengthening the complexity and time of their Rube Goldberg bell ringing devices.

These materials will benefit 6 classes a year and will be reusable and allow students to expand on their design ideas.
