In the last five years, I have seen my school's school grade go from a D to a B, and we were on the path to earning an A before distance learning occurred at the end of the school year. We are expecting gaps in our students' skills that will be larger than the typical "summer slump."
IWM serves a diverse population of students with different needs and skills.
We are a Title I school where over 80% of our students receive free or reduced-rate lunch. Our students are excited to learn and are very happy to be back at school. We are striving to put books in our students' hands whether they are learning at home or at school with us.
Our students will need more than independent learning during distance learning; they will need more guided, specific instruction. Providing that kind of rigorous instruction is demanding on teachers, and when they need to focus on their health and families can be, at times, overwhelming.
My Project
The ELA curriculum our school would like to purchase requires novels and ebooks to supplement the instruction that teachers will provide. The books through the curriculum company are very expensive. The students will be able to check out these high-quality texts to take home and use during distance learning, and then will be able to complete their assignments tied to the texts on Google Classroom.
The new curriculum we are trying to purchase will tie ELA into Social Studies and Science concepts to build our students' prior knowledge and build real-world connections.
Standardized tests contain passages on the founding documents of the United States, on animal ecology, and on space, and this curriculum seamlessly provides rigorous resources to teachers in order to build students' vocabulary. The texts will be primary and secondary resources that students will have to analyze, and therefore, understand on a deeper level.
