Were you a student that was not athletic and disliked Physical Education class because of this? During my 9 weeks Physical Education classes I conduct a two week archery unit. During this unit all ability levels have the same opportunity to succeed.
My school is a relatively large school with approximately 1200 seventh and eighth grade students.
My students are city dwellers and many come from a low social-economic background. My classes consist of both boys and girls combined. Traveling and varied activities are essentially very limited to most of my students. Needless to say most have never handled a bow and arrow and are normally very excited during our archery unit.
My Project
During my nine week Physical Education class I teach a two week archery unit. Over the years I have purchased targets and bows. Unfortunately, with this unit there is a continuous need to replace target faces and arrows. The equipment is taken very good care of to extend its use and the target faces will usually last at least two years. My students really love this unit and many students that can't succeed in other sports can succeed in archery. This unit gives many kids the opportunity to do something that they probably will not get the chance to do any where else. Our archery targets are in great need for new faces which are a must for our unit.
I can't imagine not being able to teach my archery unit.
Many students come up to me the next year and ask if they are going to get to shoot archery again. It really is an activity that all students can love and succeed at.
