Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 96% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
As our student population is on 95% free and reduced lunch, our students and their families have very little to spend on anything but basic necessities. Many of our students ride bicycles to school that are handed down to each member of the family, this ensures they get to school on time (sometimes they go from as far as 40 blocks away).
Safety is a priority for our kids and their bikes!
Almost all of them ride to school without a helmet on, and since our bike racks are in front of the school near the street, we have issues with theft (which makes them not want to leave their bikes at school, and we can't have then inside). Having helmets to give to kids who want one, as well as bike locks will make them feel a lot better (and safer) when rider their bikes and leaving them while at school.
