I am the media coordinator at a low wealth, rural school which is approximately 15 miles from the nearest town and I am asking for the funds to purchase two stationary bicycles. Our distance from town puts most of our students out of reach of the closest YMCA and gyms. My school has a weight room that was donated by a local business and is used frequently by our sports teams and by the males at our school. Our female students are not active users of the weight machines because heavy weights have to be carried from the stand to the machine and then back to the stand. Because of our weight room, our strong wrestling program, and other athletic programs for our males, they have many opportunities to exercise outside of the traditional PE class. It is my belief that our females need something special that would interest them and I think my ideas presented in this proposal meet those needs while serving the males in a new way. I would like to purchase additional equipment that the females would feel more comfortable using than what is offered now in our weight room. During my time at the YMCA, I observed that females more frequently use bicycles, treadmills, and/or elliptical machines. Many of these people were reading or listening to their IPod while they were exercising. Because of the Healthy Child Act, teachers are going to have to be more creative to assure that all students have at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. However, we will receive no additional personnel or money to accomplish this task. We can be successful with your help! At our school this year, we initiated a new and innovative program called the Discovery Block. This is a time when students get an opportunity to sign up for nontraditional classes such as: knitting, Battle of the Books, journaling, etc. I am responsible for teaching the Battle of the Books and Quiz Bowl class. To make it more interesting than just sitting around reading for the 40 minutes each day, I am proposing a way to integrate physical activity and reading. With the initial purchase of two stationary bicycles, we could begin to make a difference in our student's views on making exercise a habit. Male and female students will be able to read or listen to our books on tape while they are riding our new bicycles. When our class is not using the bicycles, other discovery groups could sign up to use them. Thus, allowing for a larger number of students to benefit from this purchase. Our goal for the future would be to offer treadmills and elliptical machines in addition to the bicycles. Please consider helping make our school a healthier place to learn by donating toward this project.
