Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in a low-income, underprivileged neighborhood my students are too easily labeled. Many people in the surrounding areas make many dangerous assumptions of them; these assumptions couldn't be farther from the truth. My students are curious, intelligent, and kind. More than that, they are resilient. Though they face multiple challenges on a daily basis, they do their best to overcome and succeed.
My students have not only made great academic progress; they've developed many social-emotional skills such as empathy.
They do this by learning from their everyday experiences as well as practice in my classroom. My students have shown growth in many areas, both academically and personally.
My Project
At my school, we teach in teams. And my team's focus this year is to cultivate global-mindedness in our teaching. In our curriculum, we include topics of social justice, civic duty, and environmental consciousness. During the second semester of this school year, we will be covering sustainability.
As educators, we strive to provide our students with a comprehensive learning experience.
Learning goes beyond worksheets and group work. Though reading, analyzing, and writing, are fundamental to academic growth, we cannot limit our students to experiences to just the classroom. With a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, our students will be able to learn from experts in the field and become more active conservationists.
All of the teachers in my team will have a different learning outcome assigned. My school emphasizes the importance of growth in writing, so students in my Language Arts class will write a paper synthesizing their research in class along with their learning at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The topic of the paper will be to explore issues in sustainability and water management, and the purpose will be ways humans can manage water better. Through both their research and visit, students will better understand their role as stakeholders of this planet, and they will be expected to present their understandings. It's no secret that writing papers is not the most exciting experience, but I'm hoping this visit will motivate our students to proudly share their knowledge.
