Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The challenge I face as a teacher is bringing all English Language Learners to a high level of literacy. The task is made difficult by several factors. One is the complexity of learning to read and write in a language one does not yet understand.
My class is a mixture of enthusiastic African American, Jamaican, Haitian, Guyanese, Indian, Puerto Rican, Peruvian, Cuban, Columbian, Vietnamese, Costa Rican, and Venezuelan kindergrtners.
As you can assume, the differences in cultures are varying. The one thing my students all have in common is they are all on free lunch and they come from economically disadvantaged families.
My Project
Each one of my students is equipped with the desire and motivation to learn to read. Unfortunately, their parent's priority is to provide food for the family. As a result, I am requesting supplies to help inspire my students to become readers. The requested bean bags will help to create an atmosphere where students are comfortable to listen and read. I have also requested a variety of audio-listening books and a stand with bags to maintain organization. These audio-books will help guide my students in the oral and written aspects of the English language which they might not be familiar with.
Please help me maintain my students enthusiasm and motivation.
My instruction helps my English Language Learners to read and write English while learning to speak and understand it. Research has shown that ELL's need speaking and listening skills from the start. I do my best to give my students the essentials, but it gets to the point where I can't provide them more without additional resources. Your donation will prevent my ELL students from falling farther behind.
