Help me give my students the best ingredients for growing our knowledge in our outdoor classroom because the azomite, coir, and worm castings will create the ideal nutrients to grow vegetables and herbs in our garden.
My 7th grade students are eager to learn. They are actively engaged in hands-on learning on a daily basis. My goal every day in Science is to make the class worth their while with hands-on lab activities, technology integration, and inquiry-based projects.
Our school is a junior high for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
Our campus is 58% economically disadvantaged. We are a rural school district located 1 1/2 - 2 hours from two major cities. Some of our students are experienced travelers, however many have not been out of the community.
Many concepts learned in 7th grade are expected to be tested in future grade levels. These supporting standards taught in 7th grade are vital for student success in future years. With this project, students will be able to further their knowledge and continue to grow in our outdoor classroom and garden.
My Project
It takes unique ingredients to create a successful learning environment in the classroom. At GJHS we continue to try to create successful learning environments for our students.
Our school garden is an outdoor classroom that creates an ongoing learning experience.
To continue to provide students with this experience, we need vital ingredients for our raised beds to grow vegetables and herbs. These vital ingredients include topsoil, worm castings, and rock dust to add to our raised beds to create nutrient-rich soil.
Without these ingredients, our garden cannot continue to provide our students with the knowledge and application of life science that includes investigating plant systems, adaptations in plants, and the flow of energy. These are just a few units that we cover in science.
