Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I middle school teacher (grades 7 and 8) it has been a challenge and a blessing to be able to meet so many different kids from different backgrounds. This year for example, I am teaching a class on emotional intelligence which has helped the students be more open and talk more to me. As a result, I now understand that no matter how poor or rich a family is, whether the parents are together or separated, at the end what matters is that the child has a structure, a positive routine and guidance.
"Your name is your brand so make sure you make the best out of it" is what I tell my students when they share with me their arguments or problems with peers, family and even teachers.
My goal this year is to have my students acknowledge that even though there are negative situations and challenges on our way, we always have to look forward, get educated, learn as much as we can from any experience and give the best of us as we never know who we can meet along our ride.
My Project
Today's education is not like it was 20 years ago in which kids were taught and encouraged to go to school and pursue a career. Today with the Technology Revolution, students need to learn how to use their cellphones with an actual purpose rather than to post pictures on Instagram. Today's technology involves knowing how to handle applications, have a topic to talk about and be followed by thousands of people.
As a result, by obtaining the Amazon Fire HD tablets, I plan to use platforms such as Scratch to teach students about coding, Splice and Intro Maker to teach students about editing videos and photos, Everfi to teach students about the use of money and it's meaning, Virtual Job Shadow to teach students about careers, and much more.
In essence, my goal is that by combing education and technology students will understand there is a world of variety out there but they have to be prepared, skilled and educated.
