This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school was formally an all African American high school before integrating in the 60s. The majority of the campus still looks as it did years ago, and many of my students parents/grandparents went to their current school and still live in the community. The school is special because it contains so much history of the culture of the community.
I believe all my students can learn that just need the necessary tools to do so.
I have students from all ability levels learning through hands-on activities, computer interaction and simulation, and cooperative learning. My students enjoy engaging in hands-on learning in my class in order to grasp concepts. With each unit that I teach models are incorporated into the lesson not only because they go along with the science and engineering practices, but it also teaches my students to analyze parts of things and explain how they work.
My Project
The Human Body unit is a big unit that takes up the entire 3rd quarter. Each year at the end of the unit the students dissect frogs in order to get a tangible experience with the parts of the human body. We need these requested paper towels and gloves to safely dissect frogs.
For many students, this is an eye-opening experience.
They have heard about and seen pictures and diagrams of the organs, but now they get to actually hold one in their hands! Students are able to compare the parts of the frog to the organs that can be found in the human body. We also discuss the systems and how each system works with other systems in order for the body to survive.
