Rhythm, Rhyme and Repetition Build Strong Readers!
My students need engaging shared reading texts that have rhythm, rhyme and repetition! The shared reading big books and poetry cards included in this project, all written by Jill Eggleton, have all three!
Our school is a K-8 Performing Arts school that serves a diverse student body which consists of 80% high-poverty and at-risk students. They come from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Our student body is made up of roughly 50% Hispanic students. The remaining 50% of our student body is a mix of African-American, Asian-American, Caucasian and Native Americans. We have a large percentage of students who are learning English for the first time.
Our students experience challenges in their daily lives and yet come to school excited to learn every day.
They are hungry for information and endlessly curious. It is my second year at this school and I'm moved by their motivation. They are begging me for reading, math, science and art! They deserve beautiful and meaningful materials to help them engage in the world around them.
My Project
These big books and poetry cards are perfect shared reading texts which will engage emerging Kindergarten and 1st grade readers in lively texts. We will use these books and poetry cards daily and focus on each one for a week. Each day we will practice a different part of reading (for example, comprehension, phonics, and vocabulary) using the same text. By the end of the week, students who are not yet able to read independently will know the book inside and out. They will love pulling it out at their big books center time and read it like real readers!
The rhythm, rhyme and repetition in these big books and poems are so important for making the text accessible and highly engaging for my emerging readers!
I will be thrilled to have these wonderful texts in my classroom. I have used Jill Eggleton texts in past school districts and have been incredulous at how engaging they are for students. The teacher tools included inside of each book help make planning highly efficient as well, which is vital as the demands on teachers ever increase.
I can't wait to start teaching with Jill Eggleton books and poems again!
