I teach music at Albany Lower Elementary School. We are a fairly large school, which in turn forces me to have double classes. I love the students. Their behavior is exceptional, but I don't have enough rhythm instruments for my large class sizes. This problem causes me to lose valuable teaching time because we are always stopping to share instruments. I want to have a set of sand blocks and a set of drums for each student. These two instruments will provide the students with two very different musical experiences. I would love for each of my students to have the opportunity to explore their musical abilities without having to constantly share instruments. My goal as a music teacher is to foster a love for music. I want my students to enjoy music as much as I do. Music is so important for so many reasons. Not only is it enjoyable, but it helps to better math and reading scores. Being able to tap out a rhythm is comparable to finding patterns in shapes. Learning to sing fluently helps students read more fluently. So you see, having an effective music program in an elementary school setting can be beneficial in many other areas of learning. But in order to be effective, we must have enough equipment for the students.
