Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Busy hands are happy hands. That is especially true in music class. While awaiting a chance to perform on the exciting instruments other students are mastering, it is extremely tough for many non-English speakers to stay focused for 2-3 minutes, a seeming eternity.
I work with over 600 students a week in grades K-5.86% of those children are from low income homes and qualify for free lunch.
We are a Title 1 school. Spanish is the first language for the overwhelming majority of my students. By the time the kids get to music they are more than ready to learn by doing. They love to have instruments in their hands and do handle equipment with respect.
My Project
The students are using a few instruments I inherited when I began teaching music here 8 years ago. The instruments were old at that time and now definitely need to be replaced. The kids use the instruments, hand drums, jingle bells, and bongos to reinforce the rhythm concepts we are practicing. At this time songs have to be sung 5-6 times to allow all students to have a chance with an instrument. New instruments would allow more students "hands on" time with something other than sticks.
As has been often quoted, music IS a universal language.
Even new non-English speaking students can achieve success in music class. My classes spend the majority of instruction time dealing with steady beat and basic rhythms. By using the Kodaly method of instruction they are prepared to see a song for the first time and clap and chant the rhythm syllables. With the help of the instruments they will be solidifying their ability to "read"rhythms at sight, while actually creating music.
