My students need 30 rhyming dictionaries in order to create rich, effective forms of rhyme in individual poems.

My Students

My students have demonstrated a genuine interest in poetry. They are captivated by the many styles and forms of poetry as a means of expressing thoughts and emotions. Often, the essence of deep authentic thoughts and feelings are clouded or lost when students can't find appropriate forms of rhyme.

I teach in the diverse, urban community that I grew up in.

My students represent a wide array of ability levels. They are bright, eager, friendly and inquisitive youngsters, who are eager to learn and succeed despite some of the challenges that each of them face when it comes to learning successfully. They are used to producing projects with few/ limited resources. Collectively, they have demonstrated a genuine interest in poetry. Many find it to be a positive form in which to express their individual thoughts and emotions. They do, however, sometimes become frustrated when the intent or meaning of their poem becomes lost or clouded when choosing appropriate and effective rhyme to express their thoughts and emotions. My students are deep, creative thinkers with many insightful ideas. Poetry is a perfect medium for many of my students to demonstrate effective and successful writing techniques. They are enthusiastic and eager to succeed. I am so proud to serve as their teacher.

My Project

My students want to create a cluster poetry book to publish and share their ideas, thoughts, feelings and experiences. A rhyming dictionary would open the door for students to see relationships amongst the many varied words in the English language. The use of such a tool would inspire students to explore word formation, forms of figurative language and to approach poetry with a sense of accomplishment. A rhyming dictionary is also a research tool. Using research tools assist students to be successful learners as they master methods of obtaining information. The use of a rhyming dictionary will allow students to focus more fully on the theme and design of their poem, rather than getting frustrated with the challenge of rhyme. After successful mastery of such usage, students may, indeed, become more accomplished rhymers.

Instilling a rich, authentic and insightful interest in poetry is not easy to do.

My students naturally present with this interest and I want to foster and encourage their desire to write effective and meaningful poetry that represents their intended purpose. They would like to create individual poems that represent many varied styles and topics so that we can create a cluster poetry book that could be donated to a local school or nursing home. Published, shared work would make them proud.
