Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your favorite childhood book? I was not much of a reader but as a child I loved the story of Ferdinand the Bull. The idea of being surrounded by flowers all day was appealing to me. I want my students to be surrounded by so many books that they have an endless list of favorites.
My classroom is filled with children who really enjoy books and stories.
Unfortunately, due to difficult economic backgrounds, many do not have a lot of books in their homes. School is where they get to be surrounded by books. I try to provide reading time between subjects as a transitional activity as often as possible. It gives the children an opportunity to self select which books they would like to read. It also gives the children an opportunity to converse with one another about the books they are reading. The conversations can be very in-depth and serious or they can be filled with contagious laughter.
My Project
My students love independent reading time. I would like for there to be interesting titles that can engage all of the children in our classroom library. I have a lot of picture books, but these are not books that the children can read independently. I have requested both fiction and non-fiction leveled readers that the children can read to themselves. I would like for the children to be able to pick out a book with confidence and know that it is at their reading level. The books I have selected will cover all of the reading levels that my students are currently reading. This will be very beneficial when I am leading guided reading groups. It will provide me an opportunity to have books available for the children to read independently while I work on specific skills with individual children.
Kindergarten is where the foundation of a child's education is established.
If a young child can fall in love with the world of books and stories, numerous doors of knowledge will be opened for him. Children love to hear the same story over and over again. I want my students to have a wide variety of books to fall in love with, and ask for them to be read over and over again.
