Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Music makes their mouths move even if they are really reluctant speakers. How do you teach vocabulary and correct pronunciation to English Language Learners in the first grade? SING!
My students are English Language Learners who are shy about trying to speak in English.
They are first grade students who only began to learn English in kindergarten. My class usually has the children who struggle the most. Many are in the resource program for assistance with learning disabilities. Some have ADHD. Some have autism. All of them want to be successful learners. My mission is to make the magic that motivates them. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to help me bring quality music into the classroom.
My Project
We have good programs for language arts and for English Language Development that focus on reading, writing and speaking. But children love the arts and singing is something everyone can do. It is so much easier to learn new words when there is a rhythm, a rhyme and a melody. It's fun! The Ipod touch and a dock with speakers will give us access to a wider range of music and make it much easier to organize and quickly retrieve just the right piece for that moment. Ipod podcasts on the Touch will provide additional educational opportunities for various aspects of our academic program. The CD player in our classroom is very unreliable and the many budget cutbacks our students must survive means the music teacher will be a rare visitor to our classroom. If the children need to follow along with my froggy voice, then they deserve all the help they can get. Please have mercy on their poor little ears!
When I was in the first grade our teacher had only an autoharp to accompany us.
When I began to teach we used a record player. This is 2010. The dinosaurs no longer roam the Earth. We can still sing about them, but shouldn't our students have access to the most updated technology to help them learn?
