The elementary in which I work in, is a low-income school, where 65.87% of the students are on free or reduced lunches. District wide, we have 55.32% of our students who are on free or reduced lunches. Since most of my students come from a low-income family, they are not introduced to a variety of texts, one being nursery rhymes, because their families cannot afford a home library. Rhyming is a very important phonological building skill. The repetition of rhymes and stories teach children how language works, and it can build memory capabilities.
My Project
Nursery rhymes have become part of the past from what I have observed in my classes.
Students are unable to recite the nursery rhymes I grew up with, due to many of my students not having the luxury of owning nursery rhyme books.
I am a Reading Specialist at a low-income school, where I work with students kindergarten through 5th grades, who are not on-level in reading and/or have not mastered the phonological/phonics skills needed to successfully read.
During reading intervention, my students will use the requested rhyming materials in small groups of 6-8 students. They will practice rhyming by reading nursery rhymes repetitively, and then work on the fun and exciting, requested activities for follow-up practice. We can use these activities to work in a small group, pairs, or even individually and/or working one-on-one with me, the teacher.
Donations to this project will tremendously improve my students' phonological skills and provide a better foundation for reading! As they learn to read the nursery rhymes, my students' confidence will rise, and they will find a love for reading!
