Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very bright and eager-to-learn kindergartners who attend a public school in the heart of the city of Chicago in the Humboldt Park Area. All of the students receive free lunch, and our school district is making record breaking and heartbreaking cuts to the budget. The students are truly suffering. The majority of students in our school are below grade level and also below poverty level. They come from homes where education is not a priority, but they come to school ready and eager to dive right in and learn.
My Project
Classroom management is key to a successful school year. I use Classroom Dojo and sticker charts to keep my students motivated and minimize behavior issues. With this, the sticker charts earn them prizes once they have been filled up. My students need a treasure chest with little prizes like smelly markers and colored pencils to choose prizes from--prizes that they look forward to earning and work hard to earn points and stickers for. With these simple prizes, it really motivates my students to show kindness, respect for other students, readiness and willingness to learn and work hard to be responsible in the classroom. Positive reinforcement is key for those really tough students, and these prizes will be great incentives for them.
