Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a special education teacher at PS 76 in Harlem. My students need a lot of motivation and rewards to continually overcome obstacles both in and out of the classroom. As a special education teacher, I focus on my student's attaining their individual goals (IEP) as well as maintaining their stamina to succeed. My students are fourth and fifth graders who are reading on a first or second grade level. They are easily defeated because learning doesn't come easy. At their age, they know how far behind they are in comparison to the peers which can be devastating to their self esteem and confidence. I want my students to continue to work as hard as they have been working. I want them to see the rewards of keeping focused on a goal despite obstacles. Most importantly, a simple reward can mean the difference between wanting to keep trying and just giving up. My students can learn and want to learn. Simple rewards such as certificates, pencils, and stickers can really make their day. I can assure you that these rewards will be treasured. Believe me, I am still amazed at seeing certificates taped on desks since the first day of school. Please help me show my students that their progress is worth celebrating.
