My school has a unique group of more than 90% Title I students, which is the largest Title I population in the district. Many of our students are homeless and we try to help their families find some stability through school life. We are the hub school for English Language Learners in the district, which creates a lot of diversity within our walls. We have students that not only speak Spanish, but also other languages as well. This diversity makes teaching a little more challenging than being in any other school in our district. As a PreK - 5 school with 24 to 28 students in each class, we have more than 500 students in our school. For Wyoming, this is a large elementary school, which also creates different challenges.
Our students have very little resources to come up with any extras, such as snacks, school supplies, backpacks, etc.
We use every resource we have to help students succeed in the classroom. With all of the diversity that is within our building, it is imperative that we use every minute to learn with great intensity. Our school motto is, "The Home of the Hardest Working Students in ...."
My Project
At our school we are trying to teach our students the love of reading and why it is important. We know our students come to school without having enough (or any) books read to them when they are younger because of this they have a disadvantage when starting school along with not learning to love reading. Throughout school our students need to continue to read at home every night to make up for the lack of reading that is done during the early years. However, this is not something that has been ingrained in them so we must teach them to love learning and want to read. We are hoping the Accelerated Reading Program will help the students get excited about reading and eventually help them love to read.
Reading is such a crucial aspect in a child's learning.
We are starting the Accelerated reader program to get the students excited about reading at home. Students will earn rewards every time they earn 5 points for reading and comprehending the books they read. We are asking for different prizes to use as rewards. We already have many rewards in place for students including lunch with the teacher, sit in teacher chair, ice cream, pancake breakfast, etc. We would love to be able to provide them with some other items to get them excited about reading.
