Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade in California. In the wonderful world of fourth grade, I strive every day to teach and motivate my students to learn and enjoy it. I am an enthusiastic teacher, and want to pass on to my students the joy of learning.
"How many points do I have?" is a common question from my third, fourth and fifth grade special education students.
Last year, I created a classroom behavior management plan. This is a points-based system in which students earn points for completing the classroom assignments and following the class rules. Every Friday, the students can cash in their points for either a small, medium or large prize depending on how many points they have. I have found that students love to add up their points for the week and strategize whether they will save their points for a bigger prize or cash them in.
My Project
Initially, I was hesitant to provide extrinsic motivation for students. I have found that some of my students, especially the ones with emotional and behavioral disorders, initially need to work toward a reward. They seem to need the reassurance that they did a good job. Once the students become more confident in themselves, I find that the points and prizes become secondary.
I usually try to purchase small games, toys and school supplies for the prize containers.
The school supplies are my favorite prizes because I know that it is something that my students need to replace throughout the year. School supplies are also expensive and a financial strain for their parents to purchase. Therefore, I am requesting pencils, bookmarks, erasers, Pencil Toppers, and reward kits to put into the small, medium and large containers.
