Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fortunate enough to be the reading teacher for very enthusiastic students in kindergarten through fifth grade. I teach in East Oakland, where more than 85% of the population receives free lunch.
The passion our students have for learning is contagious.
Here at our school, we want to meet their passion with good teaching. Our students are kind and love learning together. No matter their situation, they come here ready to learn and bring their amazing qualities and strengths with them each day.
My Project
My school is looking to obtain highly motivating prizes as incentives to build strong reading habits with our young readers. There are so many things that go into motivating students who are just learning to read and find it challenging.
Studies have found that the students who read more become stronger readers.
For the past two years my school has run a reading program to motivate our readers to read more and more at home and at school. After three months of tracking every student's reading, we have a big reading celebration where every single child will get to choose a prize for the effort they put into reading. The more each student reads, the bigger prize they can choose.
We have seen our students learn to love reading after initially just working towards a prize. The effect reading more will have on our students reading growth and overall academic success will be highly impacted by this project.
