Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are eager to read, but they don't have individual books and texts that hold their attention from start to completion. Reading is the path everywhere.

We are a Title 1 school that has over ninety-five percent of these students receiving free and reduce lunch.

There are over seven-hundred students at my school in grades pre-K to 8th grade. My students are struggling readers, and less than 20% are reading on grade level. Our library has a limited selection of texts that can peak student interest.

My Project

We will use Philip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe and Forged By Fire as a whole class revved up, responsive read aloud. During these read aloud sessions, I will teach, model and share information to enhance literacy standards, such as reading literature, speaking and listening, communication and writing. We will read aloud texts as a whole group and individually. Each student will have their own book to use while we are reading.

This project will allow me to model, and explicitly teach a variety of skills that will help develop readers.

This will give me the tools to meet the needs of the wide variety of reading levels (G to W) that my students possess in a thirty minute daily lesson.
